| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Skins |
“Skins” is a disturbing film shot on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation, where 75% unemployment and rampant alcoholism have made it America's poorest county. Only two miles from the Nebraska border, the Indians legally purchase cans of Colt 45 and openly drink. It is also near Wounded Knee, representing the white man's slaughter of their American Indian race.
The film centers on two Sioux brothers with very different lives. The older Mogey (Graham Greene) is a witty but disruptive alcoholic Vietnam vet. The younger Rudy (Eric Schweig) is a tribal policeman, dedicated to the welfare of “his people;” so much so that that he resorts to vigilantism. He beats criminals then torches a Nebraska liquor store, unaware that his brother is inside robbing it. Mogey survives the burns but we learn he has terminal cirrhosis.
Following Mogey's death, Rudy honors Mogey's tongue-in-cheek final request by performing an act of vandalism which could land him in federal prison.
