| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Scout |
“The Scout” is pure Albert Brooks as Al Percolo, a New York Yankees baseball scout. As punishment for endorsing a highly-paid loser, Percolo is relegated to scouting a rural Mexican League. But there, he discovers flaky American expatriate Steve Nebraska (Fraser) who bowls catchers over with each fastball, and hits tape-measure home runs to boot.
Brooks brings his newest superstar to New York to tryout for George Steinbrenner, who along with Ken Brett, Keith Hernandez and many other 1994 players, have valid cameos. First, Steve strikes out one slugger on three pitches, then homers deep off Brett Saberhagen. Impressed, Steinbrenner agrees to sign him big if he passes a psychiatric exam. But by now, Al fears that Steve might fail (one of his hobbies is midnight laundry) so he calls the doctor listed first in the phone book, “how can you not trust someone named H. Aaron (Weist)?” The scenes in her office are riotous as she works closely with Steve and eventually declares him stable enough to start the World Series.
Despite Steve's nearly freaking out like Al's previous protege, Al calms him literally atop Yankee Stadium in time for Bob Costas to announce a truly memorable game.
