| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Le Beau Serge |
LE BEAU SERGE, sometimes called "Bitter Reunion" or "Handsome Serge", is a movie produced, written and directed by Claude Chabrol in 1958. The picture earned the prix Jean Vigo for best picture in 1959.
Jean-Claude Brialy returns in his hometown after having suffered from tuberculosis. His best friend, Serge, is now married and has become an alcoholic after having given up his idea to become an architect. Furthermore, his first child was stillborn. Brialy will try to find a way to restore hope in Serge but he will have to face Serge's wife who doesn't want to lose her husband, the prejudices of a small rural town and Serge himself who doesn't want to be saved.
