| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Coup de Grace |
Adapted from the Marguerite Yourcenar novel, COUP DE GRÂCE is a movie directed by Volker Schloendorff in 1976. The picture earned two prizes (director, cinematographer) at the 1977 German Academy Awards ceremony.
WWI is over for two years now but, in the Baltic States, the Reds are still fighting the Germans who are slowly abandoned by the politicians of Berlin. The count Conrad de Reval, his sister Sophie and their friend Erich Von Lhomond try to defend the family castle with a little army against the skirmishes. Sophie is in love with Erich but he prefers the male army friendships and rejects her. Sophie hopes to make Erich jealous by having sex with a couple of German officers. Dsillusioned, she soon leaves the castle and joins the ranks of the Bolshevists.
