| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Cousins |
THE COUSINS (Les Cousins) is a movie produced, written and directed by Claude Chabrol in 1958. The picture won the Golden Bear at the 1959 Berlin Film Festival and is a milestone of the French new wave.
Charles has just arrived in Paris at his cousin Paul's apartment in order to begin his law studies. Coming from the country, the rather naive Charles is introduced by Paul in his circle of well-off friends who think more of boozing and having sex than preparing for their exams. Charles falls in love with Florence, a young girl who sees this group. Paul who foresees that his cousin will only suffer if he carries on this relationship, asks Florence to give up loving Charles. From this moment on a desperate Charles will choose to work all days long in order to forget Florence.
