| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Splendor in the Grass |
Based on an Academy award winning screenplay directly written for the screen by William Inge, SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS is a movie directed by Elia Kazan in 1961. Natalie Wood also earned a nomination in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category.
The wealthy Warren Beatty and the poor Natalie Wood fall in love in a small town of Kansas. While both teenagers feel that the next step of their relation is to have sex together, their parents are worried and communicate their anxiety to Warren and Natalie. Warren's father, Pat Hingle, wants his son to go to Yale and asks him to wait before thinking of marriage and Natalie's mother harrasses the young girl with moral warnings. Completely stressed, Warren decides to leave Natalie for a while in order to relax with the easy-going Juanita but Natalie is unable to endure this situation and is soon suffering from a terrible nervous breakdown. She will spend two years in a mental institution in order to recover her mental health.
