| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about On Golden Pond |
Retired professor Norman Thayer Jr. (Henry Fonda) and his wife Ethel (Hepburn) have gone to Golden Pond for the summer, where they have had a cottage since early in their marriage roughly 50 years before. He hasn't seen his grown daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda) in years, but she's coming with her fiance Bill Ray (Coleman) for her father's birthday, will leave her fiance's son Billy (McKeon) in New Hampshire while the couple goes to Europe and gets married, and return to pick up the boy later. When she does, she discovers that Billy has developed the kind of relationship with her father she always wanted. With beautiful scenery, a decent script (by Ernest Thompson, based on his play), and some terrific acting by a couple of old pros (both Fonda and Hepburn picked up Oscars for this one -- his first and only, her fourth!), this 1981 story is memorable and deeply moving.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar
