| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Malice |
Andy Safran, a professor and associate dean at a small college, and Tracy Kennsinger, who teaches small children, appear to have a good life and strong marriage. An old acquaintance of Andy's named Jed Hill, an arrogant and vain thoracic surgeon with a Harvard degree, rents the upper floor of the couple's Victorian home. One day Tracy goes into the hospital and undergoes surgery performed by Jed, who appears to misdiagnose her problem and damages her ovaries during the operation. She sues, collects millions in insurance . . . and then disappears. Gradually, Andy discovers a long-running plot is behind recent events, which are not what they seemed. This 1993 film has a terrific cast (including Peter Gallagher; and 21-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow has a small role in her third feature), and a great pedigree (co-writers Aaron Sorkin and Scott Frank are responsible for "A Few Good Men," "West Wing," "Get Shorty," and "Minority Report" between them; the great Jerry Goldsmith did the score and legendary Gordon Willis was the cinematographer), so it's a shame it's not better than it is: a so-so tricky thriller with quite a few unbelievable plot details and twists.
