| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Driving Miss Daisy |
Set in the South, circa World War II, the film focuses on two good friends. One is a black chauffeur, the other is an old white lady he is hired to drive for. Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman display beautiful chemistry together, and their characters prove that people of different races can get along if they take the time to know each other very well.

When elderly Southern lady Daisy Werthan (Tandy) climbs into her car, accidentally puts it in reverse, and drives into her neighbor's yard, her son Boolie (Aykroyd) decides she'd better have a chauffeur and hires black Hoke Colburn (Freeman). Sassy Daisy is not exactly prejudiced, but she's very resistant to change. Calm spirit Hoke gradually wins her over, however. Set in 1950s Atlanta, the story arcs across 20 years, skimming through the civil rights era and Martin Luther King's activism, but basically it's the story of how two people come to care for each other. The 1989 film, directed by Aussie Bruce Beresford and written by Alfred Uhry based on his successful play, took 4 Oscars, including Best Film. It's sweet, amusing, and very pleasant.
