| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Beyond the Clouds |
BEYOND THE CLOUDS is a movie co-written and co-directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and Wim Wenders in 1995. The picture won the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival.
John Malkovich is a director looking for ideas for his next film. In Ferrara, Italy, he remembers the love story of a man and a woman who had everything to be happy but, for an unexplained reason, never succeeded in expressing their feelings for each other. Later, Malkovich is involved in a short and passionate relation with Sophie Marceau who has stabbed her father to death. Then Malkovich imagines the life of a man who can't decide between his wife and his mistress. Finally, the fourth segment allows the director to witness the efforts of Vincent Perez trying to seduce a totally uninterested Irčne Jacob. Each story is a example of the theme of the lack of understanding between man and woman, a recurrent theme in Antonioni's filmography. Sex, when it occurs, is the only way left to lovers to communicate. The very profound dialogs of the movie contrast sharply with the intimate moments enjoyed by the characters.
