Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Flight of the Phoenix
A group of men, taking a break from their job in Arabia, board a small plane which then crashes in the middle of the desert.

This simple plot opening begins a suspensful tale with a fascinating collection of characters who must work together to survive. The Captain, (Jimmy Stewart), a crusty ex military pilot and his British navigator, (Richard Attenborough), head up a multicultural group of laborors and military men who together devise a seemingly impossible manner to escape the desert while battling the ravages of the inhospitable Arabian desert.

THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX is a movie directed by Robert Aldrich in 1965. The picture earned two nominations, in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Ian Bannen) and in the Best Film Editing categories for the 1966 Academy Awards.

Pilot James Stewart and his plane get caught in a sand storm and Stewart must operate an emergency landing in the middle of the Sahara desert. Among the eleven passengers still alive, there is Hardy Krüger, a german engineer, who proposes to build another plane from the pieces of the crashed airplane. As water runs law and men died from exhaustion, the relation between Krüger and Stewart, the young genius in technics and the old experienced pilot, becomes tougher.
