| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Bitter Moon |
Nigel and Fiona Dobson (Grant and Thomas) have decided to revive their flagging seven-year marriage by taking an ocean cruise to Bombay. An American writer named Oscar (Coyote), bound to a wheelchair, starts to divert Nigel with stories about his sexy young French wife and their wild marriage. Oscar had tried to pursue a writing career in Paris, but became obsessed with Mimi, whom he met by chance on a bus. Their steamy affair became progressively wilder -- Mimi loved S/M games -- until she managed to find a way to cripple him and keep him locked to her. The two seem to be playing Nigel for some sort of new victim; the rather straight-laced and shocked Brit is both warned and entranced by the couple's games. Roman Polanski directed this film in 1992. It's well done but rather unnerving, and almost laughably repellent.

BITTER MOON is a movie co-written, produced and directed by Roman Polanski in 1995. The picture is one of the peaks of Polanski's career and reminds us the acuteness of the first movies of the polish director.
Nigel and Fiona are on their way to India for a 6 months trip. They've been married for 7 years now and they've decided to make a cruise to celebrate this event. In the middle of the Mediterranean sea, they make the acquaintance of Oscar and Mimi, a strange couple; Oscar is a crippled who's paralyzed from the hips on and Mimi dances every night in the boat's dance hall. Attracted by the sexy Mimi, Nigel accepts to come back everyday in Oscar's cabin in order to listen to the writer's stories. Oscar will describe to Nigel the passionate love story he had with Mimi and how the couple engaged in the wildest sex perversions in order to maintain the intensity of their relationship. Nigel will also learn that when Oscar's love fade, a still loving Mimi has accepted humiliation and insults of her lover in order to stay with him. Finally, Oscar will tell Nigel that Mimi found a way to stay at his side and take revenge by voluntarily making him a cripple. Nigel, still wondering if Oscar has made up all his stories, tries to make love to Mimi despite the fact that his own wife is observing him and suffering from this situation.
