| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Just Before Nightfall |
JUST BEFORE NIGHFALL (Juste avant la Nuit) is a movie written and directed by Claude Chabrol in 1971. Stéphane Audran won the 1974 British Academy of Film Award in the Best Actress category for her performance.
Charles and Hélène Masson seem very happy in their marriage. Charles is a successful adman and they live in a superb house near Paris. However Charles is secretly cheating on Hélène with his best friend's wife. Both are regularly engaging in sado-masochist games and, one day, Charles kills his mistress after a role play. Overwhelmed by guilt and unable to go on lying to his friend François and to his own wife, Charles becomes depressed. He can't play anymore the part of the loving husband with irreproachable morals and decide to confess to Hélène and François.
