| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Deep |
"The Deep" is Peter Benchley's 1977 successor to "Jaws," and arguably more frightening. Magnificently photographed, the film features David (Nolte) and Gail (Bisset, wearing the wettest T-shirt imaginable), on a Bermuda diving vacation. When they inadvertently discover the wreck of "The Goliath," a supply ship laden with 98,000 ampoules of morphine, word spreads to nasty drug lord Henri Cloche (Gossett). He kidnaps the pair, instructs his strongarm, "if (David's) tongue moves again, cut it," then strip searches Gail.
When the couple enlist expert diver Romer Treece (Shaw), it becomes his movie. When the next dive reveals a 1764 treasure-laden galleon beneath The Goliath, pure adventure follows with double-crosses and creative ways to kill.
Finally, it is Gail who deduces that the older ship's "manifest" is really a queen's shopping list, any single item of which could authenticate the entire treasure. So Gale and David want this evidence, Cloche wants the morphine and Creece wants to blow up everything with a three-minute fuse. Who will get there first?
