Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Nina Takes a Lover
Young, lovely Nina (Giacomo) owns a shoe store in San Francisco. Her husband is often away on business trips. Spurred by her best friend's affair, Nina meets an attractive British photographer (Rhys) and becomes involved with him while her husband is away for three weeks. We learn quite a bit about each of them and their attitudes toward adultery (he reports he is married, also), through the device of a reporter (O'Keefe) for the San Francisco Chronicle who is working on a book about adultery and to whom each of them talks, separately. When the time nears for Nina's husband to return, the stakes rise, and surprises are in store for everyone. Writer-director Alan Jacobs (who was responsible for "American Gun" 8 years later) presents a decent, pretty romantic drama -- a little too tidy and yuppified, perhaps, but one that raises interesting questions. Giacomo is especially memorable.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar
