On his way to Jason's, Thornton stops at El Dorado, a little Texas town whose sheriff is Robert Mitchum, an old friend of Thornton. Mitchum tells Cole that Jason has declared a personal war against the MacDonald family in order to take over the MacDonald ranch. So Cole will decline Jason's offer and stand up for the MacDonalds when Jason hires Nelse McLeod, another famous gunman.
