Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Cookie's Fortune
Camille Dixon (Close), a control freak and aging Southern belle, is horrified to discover her Aunt Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt (Neal) has committed suicide, and she swallows the suicide note in order to make the crime look like a burglary. Unfortunately, this leads to the deceased's best friend Willis Richland (Dutton) getting pulled in for murder -- although an outside investigator (Vance) is not convinced. It's Easter weekend in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and Camille is anxious about the Easter Sunday play she is directing; plus, her mousy sister Cora Duvall's (Moore) estranged daughter Emma (Tyler), very feisty and independent, has come back to town, and quickly acquires a hunky but very dumb cop (O'Donnell) for a boyfriend. All will be revealed when the Easter play is staged. This 1999 Robert Altman film is filled with Southern eccentrics and foolishness, and light on the heavy drama. It goes down very easy.
