Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Pride of the Yankees
A young baseball player named Lou Gehrig is traded to the New York Yankees.

After a player is injured, Lou takes over for him and never relinquishes the position.

Lou's parents never wanted him to play baseball, but he kept it a secret until he was good enough and making enough money to support them.

He met a wonderful girl, who happened to be a baseball fan, and they eventually married. It took Lou's mother a while to warm up to the girl, and vice-versa, but they eventually got along.

In the prime of his life and his carrer, when he's one of the best players in the game, he begins having health problems.

He learns that his illness will not only end his career, but will eventually end his life.

Lou hides it from his wife for awhile, but she eventually finds out.

Lou is forced to retire from the game he loves. However, he does so with incredible dignity.

--Brandon Swenson, Resident Scholar

Lou Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games and considered himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. His story is neatly chronicled in this film. Gary Cooper is brilliant as the Iron Horse, who remained courageous up to his final days. Gehrig was well-liked by everyone, and Cal Ripken paid a touching tribute to him the day the Orioles shortstop appeared in his 2,131st consecutive game in 1995.
