Review Summary and Plot Commentary about To Die For
Suzanne Stone (Kidman) works as a weather reporter for a small-town TV station but aspires to much bigger things. She's not particularly smart, but she has loads of cold and nasty drive, and is perfectly willing to seduce an incredibly dim but horny young man (Phoenix) and convince him to murder her sweet, devoted husband Larry (Dillon). That, and more. This was Gus Van Sant's first highly successful mainstream film (1995), with a script by Buck Henry based on a book by Joyce Maynard inspired by the Pamela Smart case. (Both writers have cameos in the film, as does George Segal.) It's a sharp, black satire, that may make many viewers uncomfortable.
