In this H.P. Lovecraft tale, Dan Cain is attending the Miskatonic University and in need of a roommate to make ends meet. The very eccentric Herbert West shows up and takes up residence with Cain. What exactly is West doing in the basement? He has created a serum that can bring back the dead but they are extremely violent. When Dan finds out about West's experiments, he is both repulsed and in awe. West's obsession is discovered by Dr. Hall who wants to steal the serum to claim as his own discovery. The climax finds the two medical students taking their research even further and into Miskatonic's morgue.
