| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Colonel Chabert (1994) |
Based on the Honoré de Balzac novel, COLONEL CHABERT (Le Colonel Chabert) is a movie cowritten and directed by Yves Angelo in 1994. The picture earned 6 nominations for the french Academy Awards.
Colonel Chabert was one of Napoléon Bonaparte's most loved officers. At the Eylau battle against the Russians in 1807, he was severely injured at the head and left for dead. Partially amnesic, he passed the next years wandering from hospitals to homes for mentally deranged people. Now, 10 years later, Chabert has come back to Paris and hired the lawman Derville in order to recover his possessions. Chabert's wife, after the announcement of his death, had married again and is now the mother of two children. She prefers to negotiate a private settlement with Chabert rather to go in court and lose her actual family.
