| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Freshman (1925) |
Nerdy freshman Harold Lamb, an innocent from the sticks, arrives at college believing it's just like in the movies. He wants desperately to fit in, and assumes that if he acts and dresses like "The College Hero" of yore, he will become popular. Of course, the real popular crowd makes great fun of him. The cheap suit he orders for the "Fall Frolic" isn't ready in time, so a tailor follows him around at the party and patches up rips and tears as they occur; and when "Speedy" Lamb turns out for the football team, he's given the assignment of replacement tackle dummy. But Peggy takes pity on him, and circumstances ultimately turn out to put this nice guy on top. This delightful silent classic shows that, nearly 80 years later, campus types remain startlingly similar, from the prissy dean and hard-nosed coach to the nasty hazers.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar
