| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ridicule |
Based on a screenplay directly written for the screen, RIDICULE is a movie directed by Patrice Leconte in 1996. The picture earned 12 nominations (and won 4 of them) for the French Academy Awards.
In the Versailles of Louis the XVIth, Charles Berling, a young engineer, tries to raise funds in order to clean up the swamps of his native region. First, he'll have to observe the manners of the local aristocracy and, above all, avoid to be ridiculed in public by the intelligentsia.
He will be helped, in this difficult task, by Jean Rochefort, a fine observer of the King's courtesans. Berling will also fall in love with Rochefort's daughter, Judith Godrèche, whose main occupation is to test an aqualung into the nearby lake. In order to be free to go on with her experiments, Judith is ready to marry the old Chevalier de Milletail who will assure her financial independence.
