| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Marriage of Maria Braun |
THE MARRIAGE OE MARIA BRAUN (Die Ehe der Maria Braun) is a movie cowritten and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1979. The picture was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and won 5 German Academy Awards. This movie can be considered as a study of the destiny of a woman or as an allegory of Germany's political and economical evolution during the years after WWII.
The setting is a big city of Germany at the end of WWII. Maria Braun has just married Herrmann who must go back to the front on the next day. When the war is finally over, Maria will wait for weeks that Herrman reappears. After having been told that Herrman has died, Maria decides to work in a night-club where she makes the acquaintance of Bill, a black american soldier, with whom she'll live for a few months, until Herrman reappears and kills Bill.
Herrman is condemned to jail for murder but a still loving Maria decides to do everything she can in order to offer him a house and a good life for the time of his release. With this project in mind and Herrman's tacit agreement, she will seduce the factory owner Karl Oswald, become his mistress, be hired as a consultant in the factory management and reveal herself as a competent businesswoman.
