| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about College (1927) |
On a rainy graduation afternoon, high school valedictorian Ronald (Keaton) gives a speech to his class entitled "The Curse of Athletics," in which he praises books and condemns sports. This does not go over well with his girl, Mary Haines (Cornwall), or the star athlete, Jeff Brown (Goodwin), who is finally graduating after seven years of school. Afraid of losing Mary to Jeff, Ronald decides to give more attention to sports in college. He tries everything from baseball to track and field and crew. (He's even a failure at being a soda jerk and a waiter.) When the chips are down, however, not only does Ronald succeed as coxswain for the varsity crew, but he's driven to amazing feats of athleticism to save and protect Mary. At the dawn of the sound age, this is not one of Keaton's best, but it has its moments of great physical comedy and makes a decent if weaker companion to Lloyd's earlier hit, "The Freshman."
