Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Knife in the Water
KNIFE IN THE WATER is a movie cowritten and directed by Roman Polanski in 1962. The picture was nominated for the Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Polanski, in his first full-length movie, respects the dramatic unity of place, time and situation. A married couple invites a young hitchhiker they've almost run over to sail with them during one day on the lakes.

Soon, tension begins to grow between the husband, an experienced sailor, and the student. Andrzej, a sports journalist, tries to dominate the boy as he does his wife.

When Andrzej makes the young man's knife fall into the water, the masks of the three characters will disappear.
