| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Babe |
A runty piglet in Australia barely has time to absorb the disappearance of his mother from the warehouse where pigs are raised for slaughter when he is scooped out by humans to serve as the prize at a country carnival. Farmer Arthur Hoggett (Cromwell) wins the prize and takes Babe (voiced by Cavanaugh) home to his crowded farm. There are many creatures to meet: Fly, the female sheepdog (Margolyes), who takes the pig under her wing; Rex, the male sheepdog (Weaving), who doesn't take kindly to the new member of the brood; Ferdinand the duck, who thinks he's a rooster; and lots of other interesting animals. Gradually Babe realizes he might just have a talent for herding sheep, and with the help of Rex and Farmer Hoggett, the little pig trains to enter the National Sheepdog Championship, much to the consternation, amusement, and then wonder of the crowd. This 1995 Australian movie, cowritten by George Miller of the Mad Max movies(!), won an Oscar for visual effects and is utterly delightful.
