| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Marquise of O |
Based on Heinrich Von Kleist's novel, THE MARQUISE OF O (La Marquise d'O...) is a movie written and directed by Eric Rohmer in 1976. The picture won the Grand Prize of the Jury of the 1976 Cannes Film Festival.
During the final assault of the family castle, Giulietta is saved by the Russian Count Bruno Ganz from soldiers willing to rape her. A few months later, Giulietta discovers that she's pregnant but doesn't know who's responsible for her actual condition. After a violent fight with her father, she leaves home in order to retire in the country. Finally, the Count admits having raped her the same day he saved her. She agrees to marry him provided that he doesn't live at her house. The Count accepts and, for weeks, tries to be forgiven by the Marquise of O.
