| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Circus (1928) |
The Tramp finds himself among the crowd at a small circus, where the police take him for a pickpocket and give chase. He leads them a merry run through the fun house and other exhibits and into the big top itself, where he is an accidental comic hit with the crowd while earnestly trying to elude the cops. The ringmaster and owner hires the Tramp on the spot, but the new employee doesn't know how to be funny on purpose. So his boss makes him a janitor, and arranges for him always to be in the big top at showtime, where he unfailingly tickles the crowd. Meanwhile, the Tramp falls for the owner's daughter, who is an acrobat (her father is abusive), and when Rex, the dashing tightrope walker appears to be a romantic rival, the Tramp decides to compete for her affections on the tightrope. Though not one of Chaplin's greatest, "The Circus" is a solid achievement, with laughs aplenty and a bit of pathos. Chaplin was awarded a special Oscar for "versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing."
