After a stint in prison, a thug is drafted in the army. He goes AWOL and makes money by boxing under the name Rocky Graziano.
He's very successful, but the amry finds him, dishonorably discharges him and sentences him to a year in prison where he hones his boxing skills.
After prison, he resumes his successful boxing career. He marries and has a child.
He gets a title match, but he loses. He gets a contender's match before a championship rematch.
A man he met in prison threatens to expose his troubled past unless he takes a dive. He won't take a dive, so he fakes an injury.
He refuses to snitch to the New York boxing commission, so they revoke his license.
However, the Chicago commission allows him to fight.
He gets his championship rematch.
The champ pummels Rocky for five rounds. But, in the sixth round Rocky turns things around. He knocks the Champ out and becomes the new middleweight champion of the world.

Brought up in the tough milieu of New York's East Side, Rocky Barbella (Paul Newman) spends his days in and out of reform schools and penitentiaries. A chance meeting with a fight manager (Everett Sloane) reveals his unusual capacity for boxing. He rises rapidly in the ring and wins the love of a young Jewish girl (Pier Angeli). However, his new-found success is threatened by an old prison acquaintance who wants Rocky to take a dive in an important fight... Based on the autobiography of Rocky Graziano.
