Review Summary and Plot Commentary about A League of Their Own
In the early 1990s, former ballplayer Dottie Hinson (Davis) goes to Cooperstown for induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame and remembers how it was. With the advent of World War II, many male pros enlisted or were drafted into the service. To keep the ballparks filled, the All American Girls Baseball League was founded. A scout (Lovitz) found Dottie and her little sister Kit (Petty) working on a farm in Oregon and recruited them for the Rockford (Illinois) Peaches. The two sisters struggle with a growing rivalry as well as their own doubts about how serious to take this baseball thing, but they enjoy the company of their rowdy teammates, including lusty Mae Mordabito (Madonna) and Betty Horn (O'Donnell). Their coach, a washed-up lush named Jimmy Dugan (Hanks), almost sleeps through their first practices, but gradually pays more attention and gets the girls in shape for the end-of-season series. This 1992 film, directed by Penny Marshall, gives something of the flavor of the true story of women's wartime baseball, with a lot of laughs and heart. Watch for newcomer Tea Leoni playing first base for Racine.
