| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Lady and the Duke |
Based on Grace Elliott's "Journal of my Life during the French Revolution", THE LADY AND THE DUKE (L'Anglaise et le Duc) is a movie written and directed by Eric Rohmer in 2001. This film earned two nominations for the French Academy awards.
Grace Elliott, an English Lady educated in France, is staying in Paris during the French Revolution. She regularly meets the Duke of Orléans, the cousin of Louis the XVIth, who shares the ideas of the first revolutionaries. She will witness the slaughter of the noble people, the arrest and the execution of the King of France.
Helpless, she observes how the rather peaceful revolution transforms itself in a bloodbath during the Terror period. Her friend the Duke, chief of the Orleanists, understands but too late that it's necessary that he disappears in order that the revolution lives.
