| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Barabbas |
Based on Nobel prize winner Pär Lagerkvist's novel, BARABBAS is a Dino De Laurentiis production directed by Richard Fleisher in 1962. This forgotten gem deserves to be rediscovered.
BARABBAS is not an epic in the Spartacus's style. The movie tells the story of Barabbas, an uncultivated man, who doesn't understand why he has been spared instead of Jesus. Condemned a second time for murder by the roman judges, Barabbas will be sent into the sulfur mines of Sicilia where he'll cross the path of the Christian Vittorio Gassman. Twenty years later, he'll finish his career as a gladiator in Rome and die on a cross.
He'll witness the first arrestations and executions of Christians in Rome but will be unable to share their faith.
