| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Barcelona |
Ted Boynton (Nichols), a stuffy white boy from Illinois, works in sales for the Barcelona office of an American company. He's had poor luck in the romance department, especially with beautiful girls, so he decides perhaps plain, unpretty girls are the answer. Before he can put this plan into action, however, his cousin Fred (an officer in the U.S. Navy) shows up on the doorstep unannounced and pretty much invades Ted's love life as well as his apartment -- telling fabulous lies about Ted as well as himself for the consumption of the Spanish girls and other international hostesses fabulous lies. (This was Mira Sorvino's second feature role, a year before "Mighty Aphrodite.") The story takes place in early 1980s Spain, when there is considerable Cold-War anger against the U.S., so violence and political arguments form an uneasy backdrop to this mostly witty and charming romantic comedy released by writer-director Whit Stillman in 1994.
