| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Flirting |
Danny Embling, an awkward and shy stutterer who is smarter than his peers, is sent to St. Albans, a private boarding school in southwest Australia, in 1965. Across a lake stands a girls school, where another outsider, Thandiwe Adjewa, whose mother was British and father a Ugandan, is a student. Both suffer at the hands of schoolmates and sadistic teachers, but they find each other. This 1991 film is an honest and lovely portrait of teen romance and boarding school life from writer-director John Duigan -- a followup to his 1987 film "The Year My Voice Broke," which depicted Danny three years younger. Nicole Kidman plays a sexually repressed senior who admires and helps out her younger and more independent classmate, shortly before she broke out as an international star.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar
