| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Operation Petticoat |
Pacific, 1942: The newly commissioned submarine U.S.S. Sea Tiger is badly hit during a Japanese Air raid. Her commanding officer and crew manage to convince the naval command not to scuttle her, but to have her taken to Australia for a general overhaul.
This task will have to be completed by a skeleton crew under the Sea Tigers Commander plus some replacements, one of whom, though hardly a navy type, turns out to have a natural talent for 'organizing', i.e. scavenging.
Though the Sea Tiger apparently is on her last legs, her captain and crew take her out, avoiding enemy contact, sneaking from island to island and making as much repairs underway as possible.
The mayhem increases when the Sea Tiger has to take aboard a unit of stranded nurses.
When the boat needs a coat of new paint, all that can be organized are some quantities of red and white lead, leaving the Sea Tiger pink. Due to the colour both the American and Japanese Navy consider the Sea Tiger as on special mision for the enemy. Finally the sub is caught, with a malfunctional radio, by American destroyers. The only means of communication is to blow the nurses' undergarments through the torpedo tubes - which finally brings the Sea Tiger to safety.
