| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Secret of Roan Inish |
Young Fiona (Courtney) is sent to live with her grandparents in a small Irish fishing village. Through a careless word, she learns the local legend, which is also a family secret – one of her family has married the mythical selkie. The selkie is a seal-like creature capable of appearing in human form. Her baby brother, missing since washing out to sea in a cradle, is still very much on the minds of Fiona and her family, but rarely mentioned. Could the selkies have rescued him? She sees a nude little boy on the abandoned isle of Roan Inish, where her family once lived, and begins trying to unravel the secrets of her family and its own mythologies.
Directed by John Sayles.
