| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Boatniks |
Ensign Thomas Garland, U.S. Coast Guard (Morse), is assigned port duties at a busy California marina. He's not the brightest guy on the block, and unfortunately he's accident-prone as well. Kate (Powers) is a fine-looking boating instructor who's around to help him out of some of the jams he gets into. The main plot complication is a trio of crooks led by Harry Simmons (Silvers) who are also not terribly great intellects: they dropped the loot -- a bunch of jewels hidden in a picnic basket -- in the bottom of the bay and have to figure out how to retrieve it. (One of their ideas is a cute Japanese pearl diver, but they have a lot of trouble communicating with her.) This 1970 movie is one of the lesser-known live action Disney comedies: kind of simple and not very subtle, but decent fun. Keep an eye open not only for veteran comic actors Fell, Ameche, and Cox, but Al Lewis (most familiar as Grandpa on "The Munsters").
