| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Freaks |
This movie is a classic about circus freaks. It was directed by Tod Browning in 1932. It is also the inspiration for the Ramones song "Pinhead."
Hans, a dwarf who is already engaged to another dwarf, falls in love with the full-sized, arrogant, but beautiful trapeze artist Cleopatra. Hans's fiancee tells him that Cleopatra thinks he's foolish and makes fun of him behind his back, but Hans is too blinded by love to see it. He showers Cleopatra with gifts. Meanwhile, Cleopatra really is laughing at him--along with her lover, the dashing Hercules.
When Cleopatra discovers that Hans has a fortune she and Hercules devise a scheme to seduce Hans into giving her the money. In a climactic scene the dwarves welcome Cleopatra and declare her to be "one of [them]." However, it's soon revealed that Cleopatra tried to poison Hans. Soon Cleopatra is running for her life because the band of dwarves are furious.
