| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about In America |
A young Irish family move to New York following the death of their young son. They move into an apartment in a rough neighborhood. The father is gone most of the times, working a taxi cab job at night and going on auditions during the day. The mother stays at home with her two young daughters. One of the daughters narrates the story and is quite thoughtful and introspective.
They slowly make the acquaintance of their mysterious and sometimes volatile neighbor, Mateo. They eventually discover that he is suffering from AIDS. They all become pretty close-knit, despite their great differences.
Eventually the mother becomes pregnant and is told that it will be a very complicated birth. This stresses the family out since they are still very sensitive about the death of their son, Frankie. However, she is determined to have the baby, even if it means risking her life.
In the end she delivers a premature child, but she is in stable condition. Mateo, however, passes away. The family is presented with an enormous hospital bill that they cannot possibly pay on their own. But it is revealed that Mateo left them his life's savings.
