| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Sleeping Dictionary |
This is a predictably stilted story about a noble savage who enlightens uptight colonialists. John Truscott (Dancy) is assigned to Sarawak circa 1936. Upon arrival, his superior Henry Bullard (Hoskins) has arranged for the young man to have a “sleeping dictionary” – a native consort employed to use pillow talk as an opportunity to learn the local language. Selima (Alba) is a willing teacher. Truscott has to navigate local British and native society delicately, ultimately having to adjust his values and emotions to fit circumstances and prejudices.
