Frances Mayes has just been dumped by her husband for another woman, and he's taken her house. Two of her friends send her on a tour of Tuscany to get away for awhile and maybe get over her divorce. While there, Frances falls in love with a Tuscan villa that is falling apart, and buys it on a whim. The film follows her and the house's progress as they are both transformed from wrecks to masterpieces. In the end, Frances finally writes the book she always wanted to, "Under the Tuscan Sun".

35-year-old San Francisco writer and reviewer Frances (Lane) has been experiencing writer's block. Her life seems ideal otherwise, but suddenly her husband wants a divorce and pays her off to keep the house for himself and his new companion. Friends of Frances gift her with a tour of Italy as a break, and she impulsively buys a run-down villa in Tuscany. She gets to know the locals and their ways, especially Martini, a friendly real-estate agent who has a crush on her (Riotta), and Katherine, a worldly sophisticate who is multi-lingual and very open-minded (Duncan). Although this 2003 movie has almost nothing in common with the bestseller from which it took its name and the name of its author-heroine, and it is a fairly quotidian romantic comedy, both Lane and the Tuscan countryside are a delight to behold.
