Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Rush
Jim Raynor (Patric), an experienced narcotics officer, goes undercover to catch a major drug runner in a small Texas town (it's the mid 1970s). Rayor is overconfident; he shoots up drugs in the presence of dealers to prove he's tough and not a cop. As a partner on the case, he chooses tough, good-looking young Kristen Cates (Jason Leigh). Gaines (Allman, in a powerful role with few lines) is their target, Walker (Perlich) the naive dealer who gets caught in the middle when the cops force him to turn on his source, and Dodd (Elliott) is the pair's boss who worries about them. Raynor and Cates have an affair and get in over their heads, hooked on cocaine and heroin, giving false evidence in court against Gaines to try to nail him, and going to prison themselves. Based in the autobiographical book of the same name by Kim Wozencraft, this 1991 film -- a directorial debut for Lili Fini Zanuck after she produced "Cocoon" and "Driving Miss Daisy" -- is harsh and solid, if not terribly long lasting.
