| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Coming Home |
The year is 1968. Sally Hyde (Fonda) is a traditional military wife whose husband, Captain Bob Hyde (Dern) heads for Vietnam to defend his country and prove himself. Visiting with her friend Violet Munson (Milford), Sally gets the idea to fill her time by volunteering at the local veterans hospital. There she meets an angry paraplegic veteran, Luke Martin (Voight), whom she knew in high school. The two connect very deeply, which poses big problems and choices for all of them when Captain Hyde returns home. This 1978 film was one of the early attempts to depict the effects of the Vietnam war on the home front; directed by Hal Ashby ("Harold and Maude," "Being There"), it won Oscars for Fonda and Voight (who have a nude scene that was fairly spicy for the time) as well as the screenwriters, but it stacks the deck politically and has not worn terribly well.
