| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Drowning By Numbers |
This 1988 film is one of Peter Greenaway's odder, more surreal, if lighthearted pieces of work. Three women -- a mother, a daughter, and a niece, all named Cissie Colpitts -- are dissatisfied with their husbands and arrange for them to drown. The local coroner Madgett (Hill), who is addicted to game playing, agrees to help the women disguise the murders. Games of all sorts appear throughout the tale. The story is paced by numerals or collections of objects which appear in sequence from 1 to 100. Strange, tongue-in-cheek, and difficult to parse (but easy to watch if one doesn't worry about the meaning), this film can strike the viewer as either mercilessly tricky or delightfully wry.
