| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Thirteen |
Thirteen is a daring film showing just how far one girl will go just to fit in at school.
Tracy is a normal thirteen-year-old girl with some good friends and a loving mother and brother. She is a straight-A student who writes beautiful poetry and kind and caring to all. One day after summer break, she notices that Evie, also thirteen, has become the most beautiful and popular girl in school and, desperate to fit
in for once, tries to befriend Evie.
After a brief emotional struggle while doing so, Tracy is finally accepted. However, the more time she spends with Evie and her new 'group,' not only are her old friends rudely forgotten, but so is her loving mother. Tracy's world begins to spiral out of control as self-mutilation, sex and drugs are introduced. Her mother, Melanie, works hard to bring back the daughter she once knew, failing multiple times yet never giving up. Her determination only fuels Tracy's rage even more, along with Melanie's boyfriend wanting to move back in, Tracy's father never caring, and teachers who are just as confused as her family.

16 year old Nikki Reed helped cowrote this harrowing tale of teenagers experimenting with drugs, sex, and theft to help pay for the other two. Longstanding friendships are put to the test as a group of troubled teens begin to spin out of control. Holly Hunter is masterful as one of the parents desperately trying to hang on not just to her crumbling family, but her own happiness.
