Jean (Catherine McCormack)' s poet-husband Thomas (Penn) has arranged to help his wife research her latest project, enlisting his brother (Lucas) and his sailboat for a research-romantic get away. During the weekend, she learns as much about her own life as she does those of the woman she is researching. This film is based on a book by Anita Shreve that was losely based on an unsolved double murder in the 1800s. One young woman (Polley) survived to tell the events in which her sister and sister-in-law were brutally murdered on an island located off the coast of New Hampshire, while their husbands were at sea. A former male lodger, who lived briefly with the Norwegian immigrant family, was tried and hanged for the crime. Now the photojournalist is attempting to finally unravel the mystery behind these controversial murders. Jean notes an odd attraction Thomas seems to have to his brother's sexy companion Adeline (Hurley) during the adventure. As Jean works on her assignment, she also unravels some unsettling mysteries in her own life.
