The wife of a prison warden reads a bible to the prisoners. She takes pity on two brothers set to be hanged. She falls in love with one brother, Ed, and she helps them escape and goes with them.
They swipe two horses and a sleigh.
The police chase them and catch up to them in a country field.
The police give chase and there's a gun fight. Ed gets shot.
Not wanting to return to her old life, The woman talks Ed into shooting her too.
Ed shoots her, but she doesn't die.
Ed's brother, Jack, then gets shot.
Ed and Jack fall out of the sleigh and run into the woods.
The posse surrounds them and shoots both of them several times and kills them.
The woman remains in a hospital until she's healed and thrown in prison for abetting the brothers.

Mel Gibson stars as Ed Biddle, a prisoner in a turn of the century Pennsylvanian prison. Kate Soffel (Keaton), is the warden's wife who falls for Biddle. She helps him break out of prison so they can run away together. This is an engaging love story which is based on true events.
