| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about These Three |
Based on Lillian Hellman's play "The Children's Hour," the plot involves a heterosexual love scandal rather than the original lesbian theme. Right after college graduation, two friends, Martha and Karen, decide to start their own school by fixing up an old house. They come across a local doctor, Joseph, whom Karen falls in love with.
When a spoiled, spiteful young student, Mary, accuses Martha and Joseph of having an affair, carrying on in the same house as their students, the school's reputation is ruined. Another young girl who knows of her teacher's innocence is blackmailed by the wicked Mary, who threatens to accuse her of stealing a gold bracelet if she dares open her mouth. Mary's grandmother believes her story, and the three friends file a libel suit to keep their reputation sound. Though their names are eventually cleared, the damage is done to their teaching and doctoral careers.
