| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Royal Hunt of the Sun |
Based on Peter Shaffer's play, THE ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN is a British movie directed by Irving Lerner in 1969.
Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish explorer, is persuaded that there is a land of gold somewhere in Peru. King Carlos of Spain does't give him any more money for his next expedition but gives Pizarro two priests in charge of evangelizing the new territories. A few months later, Pizarro sails to South America with a little army.
After a long journey through deserts and mountains, Pizarro is finally given the opportunity to meet the Inca Atahualpa, the Son of the Sun. Atahualpa's army is soon slaughtered by the Spanish mercenaries and the Inca himself is made prisoner. Pizarro promises him liberty if he can fill a room with gold up to the ceiling. While people, from all parts of Peru, are bringing the precious metal, Pizarro and Atahualpa learn to respect each other.
